Mac Virus

May 4, 2011 at 4:08 am

Mac users are no longer immune to Viruses!

During the research for Osama bin Laden’s death, Fabio Assolini of Kaspersky Labs fond malicious domains (websites) serving up two (2) Rogueware applications specific to Mac OSX, called “Best Mac Antivirus” and “MAC Defender”.

While doing searches, the user could be redirected to a maicious website that checks for the safari browser, a U.S. IP Address, and the referrer (google or some other search engine). Upon completion of these checks, the website shows a fake screen scan. The website will then try to install an “.mpkg file (the installer for the rogue application).

There is good news though. Mac users need to athorize the install by entering their root password. If you don’t do this, the inifection can’t install.

This application came across my desk today. It’s called “CleanMyMac”, and it essentially does what is says. It contains a Cache Cleaner, Logs Cleaner, Universal Binary Removal Utility, Junk File Remover, Language Cleaner, Trash Cleaner, Application Uninstaller, Quick Erase Utility, Trash Status Monitor, Device Cleanup just to name a few. In total, there are more than 50 powerful features. Check out

Cybercriminals never rest

May 2, 2011 at 11:23 pm

The big story right now is the death of Osama Bin Laden. Even though the world was tuned into this story, Cybercriminals were making sure that they made the news as well. In the aftermath of bin Laden’s death, people started noticing a twitter account known as @ReallyVirtual had tweeted about hearing helicopters and explosions in the area about 6 hours prior to the news going public. This person essentially live tweeted during the attack, pointing followers to his website. Unfortunately for the followers that went to his site, it was compromised, and was serving a poorly detected malware infection through a Blackhole Exploit Kit.

Anyone that went to the page, would load content from the malicious URL, and then the Blackhole Exploit Kit would try several methods to try and install malware on the users PC.

Final Word. Be vigilant with your PC security (windows and antivirus), and make backups of your irreplacable data on a regular basis.
